Heart Failure Treatment

This is the condition when your heart cannot pump enough blood to satisfy the requirements of your body and is called heart failure. It does not mean your heart has stopped working, but that it needs some support to help it work better. It usually happens because the heart has become too weak or stiff. In medical terminology, it is also called “congestive heart failure.” It can occur at any age but is most common in older people. It usually develops gradually and tends to get worse over time. However, in some cases, it occurs suddenly with no prior symptoms or a history of heart disease. It cannot usually be cured, but the symptoms can often be controlled for many years.

Heart failure treatments

Heart failure is a critical health condition that needs immediate medical attention. This problem may have serious consequences for your health in the long run. As a result, treatments are centered on symptom management, disease control, and failure prevention. Treatment will usually be needed for life. Three treatment options are often used in combination.

  • Medication
Different types of medicines are given. This includes medicines for:

    • Widening blood vessels for increased blood flow
    • Lowering or normalizing heartbeat
    • Preventing fluid accumulation in the body
    • Reducing chest pain and cholesterol level
  • Angioplasty or Surgery
If the cause of the heart failure is a clogged artery or a faulty valve, angioplasty or surgery may be the best treatment option. The type of treatment you require will be determined by your treating cardiologist based on the cause of your failure. Your cardiologist or surgeon can repair or replace the valve, insert a blood vessel from another part of your body to create a new blood pathway that bypasses the clogged artery, or perform an angioplasty.
  • Medical devices
In some cases, doctors can also use devices like pacemakers and ICDs to restore the proper functioning and rhythm of your heart. These devices provide electric simulations to ensure efficient pumping. If your heart failure indicates the need for a transplant, a heart pump is used to extend your life until you find a donor or are eligible for surgery.
