Do I need a pacemaker ?
When there is a problem with the electrical “wiring” inside your heart, usually due to ageing process there can be an irregularity or slowing of your heartbeat. Thus, to deal with this problem, a small device called a pacemaker is placed under the skin of your chest. A small surgical procedure is done under local anaesthesia. After this device is installed in your chest, it will stabilize the heart rate , and ensure a standard rate of heartbeat. It provides significant relief from symptoms caused by a slower heartbeat and improves life quality.
What is a pacemaker ?
A pacemaker is a device primarily used to reinstate normal heart rhythm. It can be implanted temporarily to correct your heartbeat after a surgery or heart attack. It is also permanently placed in your chest to restore an irregular heart rate. The device uses two basic components. First is a pulse generator that produces the electric signals to be sent to your heart and second are electrodes connected to the heart chambers to carry the generator signals. These two components mimic the body’s natural signals that are responsible for creating a normal heartbeat.
The modern pacemaker devices adjust your heart rate with activity level automatically. They have a long-lasting battery with 5- 15 years of life. Once the battery life is over you can get it replaced with another similar minor surgery that is often faster and easier.
How is a pacemaker Implantation done ?
Implanting a pacemaker is a minor surgical process that is performed under the influence of anesthesia (usually local) by your cardiologist . The procedure usually last 1- 2 hours. Your cardiologist will use a major vein near your collarbone to install the insulated wires. These wires are inserted into the vein and are taken to the heart using x-ray images for guidance. These are then attached to the heart at the right positions and their other end is connected to the pulse generator machine. The machine is placed near your collarbone under the skin. The incisions are secured with suture and bandage.
Nowadays newer pacemaker devices are inside the heart directly and no additional wires are required . The procedure is done through the leg veins under local anaesthesia and the person is discharged the next day.
